ears ago, before I made a life-changing decision, I had a dream. I was in a tiny skiff, with no oar, rushing forward in a fast-moving river. I leaned far out of my boat toward my home, struggling to grab the hand of a dear one who might pull me to shore. That failing, I desperately grabbed for tree limbs hung low over the water, even clawing for tall reeds along the bank. As the rough current pushed me beyond their reach, I looked back a final time, realizing I would not see this place again. The life I had known was lost to me.

As the rough current pushed me beyond their reach, I looked back a final time, realizing I would not see this place again. The life I had known was lost to me.I turned to see the white-capped rapids ahead and a drop that hid my destination. Suddenly, I could see the beauty of the day, the birds in flight, the lush grasses and brush along the river’s edge that teamed with life. Was this the moment I surrendered to my circumstances and just let go? Would I fight my unknown fate to the last breath? Or would I make a different choice—to try flowing with the current, like a surfer becomes one with the wave? A calm descended upon me. I sat down in my boat, my breath becoming peaceful and at ease. I felt my oneness with everything around me.
Where the river would carry me remained unknown. My fate — unknown. But I was no longer afraid. I trusted the river. I trusted my journey within it. I felt the absolute, intimate and personal Love of the Creator — a love that saw me, watched over me, and that would always, unfailingly, be with me. Whatever lay ahead, this Love would accompany me. I was in its care. Resolved, I leaned forward into the water’s foam.
Affirmation: I flow with the ever-changing current of Life. I travel the river of God—from God, to God, in God’s love. I trust in Divine Life.
In rivers, the water that you touch is the last of what has passed and the first of that which comes.
